RMSLA Virtual Lunch with Joe Murphy – Info Impacts of Tech Trends, May 17, 2012

Join RMSLA at noon on Thursday, May 17 for Joe Murphy’s presentation on the “Information Impacts of Current Tech Trends.”

Learn about the biggest technology trends affecting information centers, from 3D printing to econtent directions and mobile strategies. This session by Joe Murphy explores the most current trends in technology, including the social media landscape, how shifting smartphone usage is shaping information engagement, and how the roles of special librarians are continuing to evolve.

Joe Murphy is a Librarian and Technology Trend Spotter consultant helping libraries and more prepare for upcoming technology shifts. Joe is an author and editor, an international keynote speaker, and a conference organizer. RMSLA’s Virtual Lunch on April 19, 2012 was a hit. Angela Kangiser shared her insights on “Delivering Business Research & Intelligence Visually.”

Information professionals working in all types of industries are continually looking to add value to the research deliverables they provide to their clientele. One key way to add value is to synthesize and display research results visually. Displaying research results visually helps clarify complex data, which facilitates good decision-making.

View this RMSLA Virtual Lunch event to understand:

  • Why it is important to incorporate visuals into our research deliverables today,
  • What kinds of information and intelligence can be displayed visually, and
  • How to integrate new technologies for a more visually-appealing report.

About Angela Kangiser

Angela Kangiser is Director of Business Development and Research at Access/Information, a firm that has delivered key information for decision-making to attorneys and business executives for over 30 years. Prior to joining Access/Information, Angela was president of Online Business Research. Angela is a recognized information industry leader and speaks on business and competitive intelligence research. She also writes for industry publications, including the articles, “What ‘Value-Added Deliverables’ Means Today,” (ONLINE Magazine, January/February 2011) and “Delivering Competitive Intelligence Visually,” (Competitive Intelligence Magazine, September/October 2003).

This program, broadcast on March 18, 2012, features a scan of primary sources in energy and environmental science. Special librarians from nonprofit, academic, and government settings reveal the resources that help their patrons understand our changing world.

  • Betsy Herzog (Rocky Mountain Institute, Snowmass, Colorado) presents materials on applied research related to complex energy challenges.
  • Shelly Sommer (Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research/INSTAAR Library, University of Colorado-Boulder) shows a selection of free online resources, some useful to scientists and others to members of the public wanting information on climate, invasive species, and other environmental science topics.

About the Presenters

 

Dedre Henderson is a librarian contractor in a Federal government agency who focuses on environment science, regulations, and policy in the Western U.S. and assists both EPA staff and the public. Betsy Herzog works in a nonprofit setting at the Rocky Mountain Institute, focusing on energy, engineering, buildings, economics, policy, and finance information. Shelly Sommer works in an academic setting at the University of Colorado’s Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, where she connects research scientists and graduate students with information and data in the earth and environmental sciences.

RMSLA is planning a diverse schedule of Virtual Lunch webinars for the spring and summer of 2012. Programs are held from noon to 1:00 p.m. Mountain time on the third Thursday of each month. Sessions are free to SLA members and $10 for non-members, except as noted.
